Boat Storage: This Is What You Need to Know and Do

    DouglasBy DouglasMarch 25, 2021Updated:March 25, 2021No Comments3 Mins Read

Whether you own a yacht, a sailboat, a motorboat, or some other type of vessel, odds are you paid a lot for it. Boat prices can range from a couple thousand to hundreds of millions of dollars.

If you want to make the most of your purchase, you need to ensure that you take as good of care of it as possible. Storing a boat is a great way to do that.

By having a boat storage plan, your boat will be safe no matter the weather or season.

However, storing a boat can seem a bit overwhelming for first-timers. That’s why we’ve put together this guide—to help you make the right decision when it comes to boat storage.

Keep reading to learn all about how to store a boat.

    Know Your Options

The great thing about boat storage is that there are different options for different people and boats. What works for your friend and their boat might not work for you.

Let’s take a look at three of the most popular storage solutions, as well as the different factors to consider:

    In-Water Boat Storage

As its name suggests, in-water boat storage is when you keep your boat in the water throughout the year. This is one of the cheaper and easiest storage methods.

Most people who use in-water boat storage live in temperate areas.

    Dry Boat Storage

Dry boat storage involves storing your boat outside of the water. Most of the time, this means parking your boat in an outside lot.

This is another cheaper storage option that will help keep your boat safe throughout the year.

    Indoor Boat Storage

Indoor boat storage is the most expensive storage option. It’s when you place your boat inside of a facility, often among racks of other boats.

While indoor boat storage is pricey, it also offers the most protection. If you can afford it, this might be the best option for you.

    Understand the Costs

When storing a boat, the costs that you can expect to pay depends on a few different factors. The most important ones are your location and the size of your boat.

If you live in an area with a high cost of living, you can expect to pay more for storage. The same goes for if you have a bigger boat.

In general, most people pay a minimum of $50 per foot of their boat. In more expensive areas with a higher cost of living, that number can climb to around $200 per foot.

    Take Care of Your Boat

If you’re lucky enough to own a boat, you want to make sure that you do everything in your power to protect it from damage. Boat storage can help you do that.

Use this guide as a resource to ensure that your boat stays safe throughout the entirety of the year.
